Housing & Homelessness

LA Voice believes that access to quality and affordable health care is a fundamental human right and is committed to working for health care reform. Locally, LA Voice helped found the Children’s Health Initiative (CHI) of  greater Los Angeles, providing quality and affordable healthcare to thousands of children across Los Angeles. At the national level, along with other affiliates of the PICO network, LA Voice community and clergy leaders have been lent a strong voice for the reauthorization of SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program).

Los Angeles is in the midst of a housing crisis that is severely impacting our communities.  Longtime community members are being displaced by unjust evictions, condo conversions, and demolitions.  The rising costs of housing is putting the dream of home ownership out of reach of many.  LA Voice works to expand the construction of affordable housing, while also educating current tenants about their rights.

LA Voice promotes civic engagement with the belief that active citizens can make change in their community. We are currently working on the Ya Es Hora! Campaign in collaboration with Univision, the National Association of Latino Elected Officials and Los Angeles Community College. Together, we are helping hundreds of eligible community members fill out the N-400 application, provide them with free citizenship classes and workshops to develop leadership.

LA Voice has established itself as an effective change agent in combating violence and crime.

We work with local Police Departments to close down drug houses, and coordinate meetings for community members to speak out to public officials about safety concerns in their neighborhoods. We also work to target the root causes of violence, by fighting for more services and opportunities targetting youth.  This includes improving their education, providing job training programs and in some areas, the expanding existing youth services.

Building Healthy Neighborhoods

LA Voice believes in promoting healthy and safe communities, inspiring residents to take pride in their neighborhood. Member congregations throughout the city host neighborhood clean-ups where leaders and their families spend a day cleaning up their neighborhoods. In South LA and mid-city we have been working diligently to install traffic signals, speed bumps, and improved street lighting.
