LA Voice believes that the root cause of nearly all of the most pressing problems present in our society today is a fundamental lack of civic participation and engagement. By most measures (voting, participation in voluntary organizations, etc.) civic engagement is in decline in our country. This trend exacerbates all other social problems, by isolating Americans from participation in the eradication of social problems through their democracy. The PICO National Organizing Network is a recognized national leader in strengthening local communities by increasing civic participation, leading to some of the most pioneering policy solutions in the country.
The basis of the work of LA Voice is the religious congregation. LA Voice works with all faith traditions, recognizing that all traditions place a high value on justice and equality. We also recognize that religious congregations stand as one of the few voluntary organizations that bring people together in a substantial way. By engaging people in public life through their church, synagogue, or mosque, we can usher them into increased civic participation in a way that is comfortable and natural. Currently, LA Voice is working in four areas throughout Los Angeles: Boyle Heights/East Los Angeles, Hollywood, South Los Angeles/Mid-City, and Santa Monica/West Los Angeles. In these areas we are working with a total of 25 member congregations.
